Ingrimm: Böses blut
02/09/10 || Khlysty
In case I haven’t made it clear in the past – I really cannot remember now, what with being a staffer of GD for almost two years…-, I HATE power/folk/medieval metal and all the possible configurations of it. I hate it deeply and completely. I hate the bastard so much, that I would happily burn a thousand CD’s of said genre, while dancing naked the rain dance, in exchange for the most overplayed riff of, say, Darkthrone. That’s how much I hate it and I hate it all the more when there’s a band of said genre that proudly displays an affinity towards using obscure instruments, so as to make the “medievality” of its sound more “genuine”.
So, I was ready to tear Ingrimm a coupla new ones, when I picked “Böses blut” for review from the pile of “review this shit A.S.A.P., you lazy bastids” CD’s that da Lord from time to time compiles for us. Medieval metal? Check! From Germany? Check? Silly “medieval” look? Fer sho! Folk instruments? Check! JEEEEEZUS!!!!, what the fuck had I put myself into? Well, nothing that really hurt. See, for all their drawbacks, Ingrimm is a band that I can easily enjoy for a coupla times, before I move on to something more substantial.
Yes, Ingimm plays your basic, galloping, mid-to-fast tempo’d power metal, that anyone, even with a passing interest in metal, would have listened to at least a jillion times before. BUT, the band is tight, the riffs are catchy and the playing is lively and pretty inspired for such a tired and done-to-death kind of music. The guitars, even though the production lacks in punch, come off as crunchy as possible, the drums, even basically buried in the mix, propel the songs and the mysterious instruments actually don’t bother me as much as I thought they would.
Of course, there’s still much to be desired for this to rise above the sea of mediocrity. The vocals are serviceable, when not downright annoying. And the band displays a serious lack of originality when it comes to songwriting; to put it in another way, the use of a hurdy gurdy does not a good song make, okay? So, if one’s a fan of the sub-genre, one might like what’s in store here. But, for the more discerning metalheadz, I would never even dream of suggesting Ingrimm and their brand of medieval-folk-whatever metal.
